Planning A New Website - Part 1: Budget

Don't spend too little, don't spend too much.

First line research about a company or organisation tends to happen on the website these days, so it's important that your website reflects what you do and how well you do it! The most basic websites can be set up cheaply and quickly, but rarely deliver good results.

We often hear about companies that have employed a friend or relative who is 'good with computers' to build their website. Well, if money is tight and you just need a page to prove you are a real company then this is a perfectly legitimate solution in the short term, but remember that cheap, simple websites tend to be built on templates that are used by hundreds or even thousands of other companies.

So, if you're tempted by a cheap template site then ask yourself, "Are we a 'me too' company?" Also, don't forget to ask your computer-savvy friend to see some portfolio work and ask about the results their sites have delivered. If neither exist then perhaps it's time for a polite 'thanks, but no thanks....'

If the above just sounds like a sales pitch for our services, well I guess it is, but there again we wouldn't propose going 'over the top' either. It's very easy to spend a large amount of money on a website and, if you're an online only retailer or an internationally recognised brand then that may be exactly the right investment to make, but if like most you're somewhere in the middle then here are a few things to look for when you choose a website supplier:

  • The ability to update simple bits of your website yourself (product details, text, blog posts and events, etc.)
  • Correctly formatted metadata to ensure you get optimum results with search engines.
  • A template design that reflects your own brand and is acceptable for your chosen target customers.
  • A design that's integrated with your own Social Media feeds.

Presto AV are always happy to discuss your website requirements and will always be honest with you about our suitability to build it.
